Cataracts cause the lens in your eye to become cloudy over time. This age-related condition affects many people around the world so it’s important to know some of the common warning signs.

Although cataracts are a common eye condition, we’re always surprised by how little people know about it. So if you are ready to test your knowledge about cataracts, take our little cataracts quiz below.

True or False: Cataracts can be prevented.

False! There is no surefire way to prevent cataracts from forming. There are certain lifestyle changes you can make to help prevent cataracts. This includes things like wearing sunglasses, avoiding second-hand smoke, and living a healthy lifestyle.

However, even if you do all of those things you may still develop cataracts at some point.

True or False: Cataracts can spread across your eyes.

False! This is a common misconception. Cataracts are not a type of growth that spread across your eye. Rather, they form when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. They aren’t contagious and they can’t spread but you can develop cataracts in both eyes simultaneously.

True or False: Cataracts only affects elderly patients.

This is definitely false! It is true that cataracts are more common in elderly patients but they can form in individuals of all ages. Babies can even be born with cataracts.

True or False: There are different types of cataracts.

This one is true! There are different types of cataracts and they are classified depending on where they form in your eye. For instance, nuclear sclerotic cataracts form in the nucleus of your lens. Whereas cortical cataracts initially form in the back of the eye then move to the front.

Living with cataracts can be challenging but there are many options available to cataracts patients. Cataract surgery is one of the best and safest options available at this time. To learn more about cataract surgery, contact our office today to schedule your consultation!
