Considering LASIK? Ask These Questions

Before you can get LASIK surgery, you’ll have to go in for a consultation. It’s a good idea to prepare for your consultation by coming up with a list of questions to ask. Use these questions and add your own if you wish. Then, you will know everything there is to know about the surgery before you schedule it.

Is my refractive error within the approved range?

LASIK isn’t meant to fix severe refractive errors. Instead, there is an approved range, meaning it treats certain degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. If you fall within the approved range, you are much more likely to achieve a successful outcome. However, if you fall outside of the range, you will likely have to get another LASIK treatment. Understand where you fall on the range before you decide to move forward. That way, you will know what to expect from your surgery.

Am I at an ideal age for LASIK?

Your eyes will change quite a bit over the years. For instance, your eye prescription will fluctuate up until around 25 years of age. Then, when you get to the age of 40, your eyes will start changing again and you will likely need reading glasses. Talk to your eye doctor about your age and how it will impact your surgery. For instance, if you decide to have the surgery when you are close to the age of 40, you might need reading glasses when it is done. Going over all of the risks and benefits ahead of time is essential before scheduling LASIK.

What happens if I don’t get the desired results from the procedure?

Some people get 20/20 vision from LASIK, while others still have to use their glasses. Fortunately, you can get a touch-up if you don’t get the desired results. Go over your touch-up options with your eye doctor, including how much it will cost. You also need to talk about your age when discussing a potential touch-up. Some eye doctors prefer to avoid touch-ups on older patients, since it will make them more likely to need reading glasses. Going over this ahead of time will ensure that you are prepared going into the surgery.

What side effects can I expect?

Some side effects are common right after LASIK eye surgery. For instance, many people suffer from dry eyes for a few weeks after the surgery, but that side effect typically goes away. After your eye doctor examines you, he or she should be able to determine if you are at a high risk for uncommon side effects or if some of the common side effects will last longer than normal.
