How Do You Tighten Droopy Eyelids?

Sagging eyelids can make you look tired and older, regardless of your energy level. Many people want to keep their appearance matching how they feel inside, so they turn to oculoplastic professionals to help them.

Eyelid surgery is an incredibly effective way to tighten up the skin around your eyes. It can improve many kinds of cosmetic insecurities and even improve some people’s vision.

Keep reading to learn more about how eye doctors tighten droopy eyelids!

How Do Droopy Eyelids Affect Vision?

Eyelids are essential for maintaining the health of your eyes. They are a barrier between your eyes and the elements, protecting the eyes from abrasions and injury.

Eyelids also spread tears across the surface of the eyes to keep them lubricated. However, eyelids also need to be lifted enough to be out of the way when you need to see.

Aging, sun exposure, frequent cigarette use, and other factors can cause fat and excess skin to build up in the area above the eyes. Since eyelid skin is the thinnest skin on the body, it can easily stretch and cause an undesired appearance.

You can also develop ptosis, a condition that causes the eyelids to droop and only be able to open partially. In some cases, the skin or eyelids can block the pupil, affecting your field of vision.

Eyelid surgery can improve the appearance of your eyes and approve the function of your eyelids. Insurance does not often cover eyelid surgery when performed to accomplish cosmetic goals.

However, if your drooping eyelids are affecting your vision, blepharoplasty and ptosis repair might even be covered by your insurance.

What Happens During An Eyelid Lift?

A blepharoplasty or ptosis repair is a surgery designed to remove excess skin and fat from the eyelids or lift the eyelids. You won’t have to stay overnight for the procedure, and it only takes about an hour to complete.

First, your eye surgeon will make incisions in the crease of your eyelid to hide any scarring from the procedure. The natural fold in the upper eyelids easily covers up the evidence.

In the lower eyelids, the incisions are made inside the eyelid or along the crease of the eyelash line. Next, your eye surgeon will make the necessary adjustments to the skin, muscle, or fat on your eyelids to accomplish the desired goal.

Will It Take Long to Recover From an Eyelid Lift?

Recovering from eyelid surgery takes about two weeks on average, but it could take up to three weeks. You may experience some bruising and swelling during this time, but you can often manage these symptoms with cold compresses.

You will likely be able to resume most of your normal activities within days. Make sure to consult with your doctor about the timeline of your recovery.

Your eye may also feel sore or uncomfortable as it heals. Of course, it is important not to touch or rub your eyes at any point to avoid possible complications.

For at least the first week of recovery, you should avoid wearing makeup for similar reasons. Eyelid surgery can help accomplish many goals, whether for cosmetic or functional reasons.
